The Irish embassy in Mozambique and the Gorongosa Restoration Project yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding donating €5 million for the implementation of a project for the park over the next five years.
“Our goal is to assist the Gorongosa National Park (PNG) project in implementing activities in the areas of human development, conservation, science, and in promoting sustainable economic and ecological activities,” Irish ambassador to Mozambique Nuala O’Brien said.
The fund will be made available at the rate of one million Euros per year.
“We are grateful to the Irish people, who share our belief that all children should be in school, and that biodiversity needs to be protected for the benefit of all of humanity,” Gorongosa Restoration Project President Greg Carr said.
“The conservation of nature and biodiversity and the human and sustainable development of the communities around the park” are one of the main goals of the project, he stressed.
“We hope that through this partnership we are contributing to a future in which Gorongosa National Park is a symbol of prosperity, reducing inequality, maintaining peace and security and environment conservation,” Ambassador O’Brien said.

At just over 4,000 square kilometres in extent, Gorongosa National Park, located at the southern end of the East African Rift Valley, is “the main national wildlife park in Mozambique”.
The site has been restocking after decades of poaching and the civil war which ended in 1992.
