Mozambique: MSMEs contribute 23.4% to the GDP

The institute for the Promotion of Small and Medium Enterprises (IPEME) has been meeting in Macaneta, Marracuene district, Maputo province, since yesterday, in its fourth Consultative Council.
The two-day meeting, called to discuss the development of companies and the institution’s guiding instruments, is held under the motto “Driving through strengthening local industry for the empowerment of MSMEs”.
The meeting is attended by the institution’s staff, private sector, cooperation partners and other players in the micro-enterprise chain, and is based on Article 6 of Decree No. 84/2019, of October 11, which aims to coordinate the activities of IPEME, IP at national level.
Convened and directed by the General Director of IPEME, IP, the IV CC is chaired by His Excellency Silvino Moreno, Minister of Industry and Commerce. The meeting aims to reinforce the commitment to achieving the strategic objectives of IPEME, IP, outlined in the PQG (Government Five-Year Plan), through an integrated operational model.
The event addresses five thematic blocks, including Programmatic and Guiding Instruments from IPEME, IP; IPEME, IP Regulatory Instruments; Strategic Instruments of IPEME, IP; National and Global Initiatives to Support MSMEs; and Financing Opportunities.
In his opening speech, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Silvino Moreno, highlighted the progress made over the last year. During the 2023 financial year, a total of 8,209 MSMEs were assisted and trained, significantly exceeding the expected annual target of 5,270. Among the highlighted actions are the formalisation of 898 MSMEs, the preparation of 338 Business Plans for Entrepreneurs, support for access to financing for 1,729 MSMEs and the support provided to 344 MSMEs in accessing markets.
These positive results impose new challenges on the sector, highlighting the need for innovative strategies and collaborative work between government entities and MSMEs to further boost the country’s economic development.
The IV Advisory Council of IPEME, IP, promises to be a milestone in promoting the growth and strengthening of MSMEs in Mozambique, defining operational, realistic and strategic approaches to face current and future challenges.
