Mozambique is inviting Russian companies to produce gas in the country, Mozambican Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Maria Manuela dos Santos Lucas said.
“We want to further diversify this sector further, and we have asked Minister Lavrov to support major Russian oil and gas companies entering the Mozambican market so that we can have more diversification,” she said at a press conference following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“Italian and American companies discovered gas in Mozambique. But now we have other partners as well, for example, France’s Total and ExxonMobil from the U.S., and companies associated with South Korea are also working here,” she said.
The Coral Sul FLNG project operated by Italy’s Eni for liquefying natural gas produced under the Area 4 concession in the Rovuma basin is already being carried out in Mozambique. A similar second project, Coral Norte FLNG, with capacity of 3.55 million tonnes per year, has been approved. The Rovuma Mozambique Venture (MRV) consortium, which includes ExxonMobil and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), ENH, KOGAS and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), has a 70% stake in the project. A final investment decision has not yet been reached on Coral Norte FLNG.
ExxonMobil is the operator of the Rovuma LNG project with capacity of 15.2 million tpy, also involving MRV. No investment decision has been reached on this either.
TotalEnergies wants to build a 13 million tpy LNG plant onshore with the participation of ENH Rovuma Area Um, Mitsui, ONGC Videsh Ltd., Beas Rovuma Energy Mozambique Limited, BPRL Ventures Mozambique B.V. and PTTEP Mozambique Area 1 Limited (8.5%). The project was put on hold due to unrest in the country.
