The Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi on Wednesday officially launched a project, valued at six billion meticais (€86 million), that foresees the construction of 61 courts in the country.
“With great satisfaction today we conducted this official launching ceremony for the initiative, [which is] an important milestone for improving access to justice and the rights of citizens,” President Nyusi said during the laying of the first stone for the construction of one of the courts, in Ndlavela district, Maputo province.
Called “One District, One Building Worthy of a Court”, the programme aims to provide all 154 districts in the country with courts enjoying “decent” facilities, and built over the next three years with funds from the government and the courts.
According to the head of state, in addition to new buildings, some existing buildings will be requalified and rehabilitated, “improving the conditions of convenience and dignity of the staff who work in them, and of all those who seek their services”.
“May the initiative not only be seen as building physical infrastructure. It should be seen as part of building justice, of the full exercise of social justice,” the president added.
Official figures indicate that, at the end of 2018, Mozambique had 138 district courts, 11 provincial courts, three appeal courts, two specialised jurisdiction courts and one Supreme Court, a total of 155.
