Around 3,500 people displaced from their homes by terror attacks in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado have left the houses of host families in the neighbouring province of Nampula and have presumably returned to their places of origin.
Speaking on Thursday in Nampula city at a meeting of the Emergency Operational Centre (COE), Alberto Armando, provincial delegate of the country’s relief agency, the National Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Institute (INGD), said 3,467 people had sought shelter at the houses of relatives in Namialo in Meconta district, 30 on Mozambique Island and 14 in Mogincual district.
“The displaced people have moved as they are no longer at the places initially mapped by the INGD. We believe they may have returned to Cabo Delgado and the same situation may be occurring in other places which received and housed displaced people,” Armando said.
The Secretary of State for Nampula, Mety Gondola, hoped that the authorities will be able to confirm that the displaced people have returned to their places of origin.
“There are strong indications showing that some are returning home and we hope that the move has been motivated by the relative peace in the affected zones. But we want to make sure there is no other reason. Regarding the apparent increase in displaced people recorded in Nacala-Port district, the team on the ground will, within the next few days, bring detailed information about it”, Gondola said.
Despite the rising numbers recorded in Angoche, Monapo and Rapale districts, the INGD believes they may not represent new arrivals. Armando said the majority are living in the houses of host families while 2,436 are in the Corrane resettlement site, in Meconta district.
Meconta hosts 20,229 displaced people, followed by Nampula city and Nacala Port with 19,478 and 6,888 respectively. The coastal district of Memba houses 4,060 displaced.
