The Minister of Transport and Logistics, João Matlombe, yesterday launched, in the city of Matola, Maputo province, a new public passenger transport service that includes buses and railcars from the company Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique, connecting the cities of Matola and Maputo.
The pilot phase, which will last 60 days, involves 15 buses, with a capacity for 90 passengers each, which should serve users of the Matola Gare and Machava railway stations, along the Ressano Garcia railway line.
For the Matola Gare station, the buses will collect passengers during rush hour to and from the neighborhoods of Tchumene, Terceira roundabout of the ring road and Uamatibwana. At Daniel station, the neighborhoods covered are Malhapwene, Tsalala and Khobe, while at Machava station, buses will serve residents of the Socimol, Bedene and Patrice Lumumba neighborhoods, and at Maputo City Central Station, there will be buses to and from the Praça dos Combatentes and Museu terminals.
Regarding the initiative, the President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, during a visit yesterday to the Aga Khan Academy in Matola, said that the executive would continue working to improve transportation conditions in greater Maputo. “The intermodal transportation between the city of Maputo and Maputo province was inaugurated here today by the Minister of Transportation and Logistics. We will continue working to improve transportation conditions,” the head of state promised.
Modal integration is much more than the articulation between buses, trains and semi-elective transportation, as it involves creating a single, coordinated system focused on the citizen, with integrated timetables, unified ticketing, accessible infrastructure and modern management mechanisms.
“This is an initiative that aims to place passengers at the centre of public transportation policies,” Minister Matlombe said.
The success of this initiative will be the basis for the gradual expansion of modal integration throughout the Maputo metropolitan area and, in the future, in other cities in the country, with this pilot project being the basis for a new paradigm of urban mobility that is innovative, efficient and sustainable.
Intermodal transportation works through integrated electronic ticketing, in which the passenger purchases a rechargeable card that allows access to buses and train travel, through electronic validation per trip.
