Interior minister Amade Miquidade has challenged the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), which is currently holding its Coordinating Council, to continuously train to combat terrorism in Cabo Delgado, and to improve strategies to address the scourge of kidnapping in the country.
The opening session of the Coordinating Council took place at the Academy of Police Sciences (ACIPOL) in Marracuene, Maputo province.
For the interior minister, “the fight against terrorism presupposes the permanent training of SERNIC officers and agents. We are given specialised training, because the terrorists act in different ways,” one of them being “the form of guerrilla [warfare], [seen] in Cabo Delgado”.
“Terrorists recruit young people, forcing them to join their ranks. SERNIC is in charge of carrying out investigations to curb this criminal activity,” Amade Miquidade said.
This year, at least 11 abductions have taken place in the country’s main cities, still with no clarification. Miquidade said however that a process to improve the strategy to counter this type of crime was underway.
The interior minister vowed to punish and expel any SERNIC agent who allegedly joined or abetted a criminal network. “No individual eventually linked to criminal activity will be spared,” the minister said; they would surely be brought to justice, for due accountability.
