Twenty-four hours before the President of the Republic visited the province of Cabo Delgado, insurgents there mounted an attack on the 19 de Outubro village in Quissanga district, also known as “Cruzamento da ADPP”[“ADDP Crossing”], Carta de Moçambique reports.
The raid took place at about 6:00 p.m. on Sunday evening, and hit the village and the Defence and Security Forces position installed in the area after the attack on nearby Bilibiza. At the time of going to press, there was no confirmation of casualties – only material damage.
Sources told ‘Carta’ that the insurgents could not do their worst because, after the attack on Bilibiza, 19 de Outubro residents abandoned their homes, taking refuge in Mitambo village in Meluco district, and both guests and hosts fled into the bush.
Fear of attacks and uncertainty prevented all but three minibuses leaving Macomia for the bridge over the Montepuez River on Monday morning.
In the attacks of 29 January, insurgents burned the headquarters of the Bilibiza Administrative Post and the 25 de Setembro and Bem-Vindo villages. Four people died, one elderly resident by fire and three adults beheaded in the fields.
Attackers set fire to five schools – three primary schools, the Agrarian Institute and the Teacher Training Centre – along with the Administrative Post office building, a health centre, 30 commercial establishments, a police vehicle and more than 800 homes.
At the Mahate Administrative Post, the insurgents set fire to two health centres (Cagembe and Mahate), four primary schools, commercial establishments and several houses.
