Mozambique: Institute revises down cotton harvest marketing target

The Cotton Institute of Mozambique (IAM) on Friday revised down the marketing target for the 2019/2020 harvest to 40,000 tonnes from the 56,000 initially, due to the impact of Covid-19.
“We will always monitor the situation and it may happen that during the harvest we can exceed this number,” said Luis Tomo, director of the IAM, quoted on Friday by the daily Notícias, on the opening day of the harvest.
The irregularity of rain has also damaged the forecasts.
In 2019 the country produced about 45,000 tonnes of seed cotton.
The end of the marketing harvest is scheduled for 30 September.
The Mozambican government announced in May the disbursement of 240 million meticais (€3.2 million) to subsidise small cotton producers.
In addition to the subsidy, the sector, which involves 250,000 producing families in Mozambique, will benefit from new minimum prices, also in the ambition to protect families that depend on the crop.
First quality seed cotton will now cost 25 meticais (33 cents) per kilogram compared to the previous 23, while second quality cotton will go from 17 meticais (22 cents) to 18 meticais (24 cents).
Official data said that the country produces between 40,000 and 50,000 tonnes of cotton annually, this being the seventh most exported product.
Nearly one million people in rural areas in Mozambique depend on the value chain of this sector.
