The National Petroleum Institute (INP) is eager to see the resumption of hydrocarbon exploration projects in the Rovuma Basin. On Thursday, in the city of Pemba, it issued an appeal to investors to reinvest in Cabo Delgado.
This encouragement from the Mozambican authority comes three years after Total Energy suspended its activities due to “force majeure” related to security concerns. The INP reports that there are now solid signs of a return to normalcy in the social and economic life of many districts in Cabo Delgado, previously affected by insurgency.
For the INP, the resumption of normal life by the population indicates that conditions are ripe for advancing gas projects, specifically Mozambique LNG in Area 1 and Rovuma LNG in Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin, which are currently on hold.
The statements were made by Esperança Maculuve, the INP’s Administrator for Institutional and Business Development, speaking to government officials and economic agents at the Energy and Industry Conference (MEIS).
According to a note from the INP published on its website, Maculuve encouraged TotalEnergies and MRV to resume their activities as soon as possible, considering the considerable and consistent security improvements in Cabo Delgado.
Maculuve highlighted the crucial role that the concessionaires of Areas 1 and 4 in the Rovuma Basin will play in the industrialization and development of the region. She also noted that the Coral Sul Project, under the leadership of Italian oil company ENI, has been in production since October 2022, demonstrating the significant potential of gas projects in the country. She emphasized that this hydrocarbon has been chosen as one of the preferred energies for the ongoing global energy transition.
The administrator stressed that the regulatory body for petroleum operations is committed to maximizing the opportunities presented by these resources for the country and has been in contact with potential investors.
“The process of clarifying the terms of the contract model with the winning companies of the Sixth Licensing Round for Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production Areas is currently underway, aiming to sign the respective concession contracts in the coming months,” she explained.
The MEIS 2023 conference, which continues until this Friday in Cabo Delgado and from June 6 to 8, 2023, in Maputo, aims to discuss how to transform Mozambique into an energy and industrial hub. The event is organized by the Mozambican Local Content Association (ACLM).
