More than 5,000 inmates will be released from prison facilities across the country under an amnesty pardoning sentences of up to one year as part of measures aimed at preventing the spread of the new coronavirus in penitentiary establishments.
The country’s prison population being very much at risk from the new coronavirus, the Mozambican parliament has passed an amnesty law for crimes punishable by up to one year and set aside sentences up to the same length.
The Supreme Court makes it clear that prisoners who commit a crime while at liberty and for the duration of their sentences will return to prison to serve them.
A total of 34% of the jail population will leave, the majority reportedly in Maputo and Sofala provinces.
