The province of Inhambane, in southern Mozambique, needs almost 300 million meticais (four million euros) for post-cyclone recovery, a source from the Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction announced on Wednesday.
“For the province to return to what it was before the passage of these cyclones, we need four million euros,” said Cândido Mapute, delegate of the Institute speaking during a session where the impact of the rainy and cyclonic season 2020-2021 was analysed.
Mozambique has been hit since October by extreme weather events, particularly storm Chalane and cyclones Eloise and Guambe, as well as other weeks of heavy rain and flooding.
According to the official, the areas that most need intervention are agriculture, education, health and for access roads.
“For urgent needs, particularly for the most affected districts, we are talking about 41 million meticals [566,000 euros] which the government urgently needs to mobilise to meet” the province’s needs, he said.
Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by climate change in the world, facing cyclical flooding and tropical cyclones.
A total of 96 people have died due to cyclones and other natural disasters in the country during the current rainy season, according to government figures.
The storms have affected 676,314 people and also caused 150 injuries.
