Lack of water and some hospital services is worrying the community of Inhaca Island, where the main health centre has been without reliable water supplies for more than two months.
The health centre serves around 6,000 of the island\s inhabitants, and falls within Maputo City municipality. The unit has been without a reliable water supply for some time, users complain.
Another problem is the lack of some services such as X-rays and ultrasound.
“We do not have ultrasound services, either. It is difficult to travel to the city to access these services – it costs a lot of money. We are asking those in charge for a solution regarding these services here at the hospital,” one health centre user said.
The hospital management explains that the water supply problem arises when there are faults in the water pump, and says that the problem has been resolved, at least temporarily.
The lack of other services, such as X-rays and ultrasound, obliges the health unit to transfer patients to other hospitals in the city centre.
The island of Inhaca currently has three health units, Inhaca Health Centre being the largest.
