Information on the location, performance and productive capacities of the industrial sector in Mozambique is still not comprehensive, a fact that constitutes a major constraint, both for the Government and for investors.
In this perspective, and in order to fill this gap, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Silvino Moreno, launched in Maputo this Monday (19-06), a project called ‘Mapping of the Manufacturing Industry in Mozambique’, which consists of a comprehensive survey of the number of existing industrial companies throughout the country.
Speaking at the ceremony, the minister said that the objective is not only to update the data network, but also to open space for the development of support plans that help revitalize the sector, in order to increase its contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP).
“The government’s intention is to boost industry and, for that to happen, we need to know the situation of each of the companies, which ones benefit from certain programs and what is the impact on the economy,” explained Silvino Moreno.
According to the minister, the government’s expectation is that the activity “contributes, above all, to real knowledge of the situation of the industrial sector, so that, within the scope of the National Program to Industrialize Mozambique (PRONAI), there are specific actions for the strengthening and consolidation of companies”.
The project will be executed over a period of two years by Ernst & Young, an institution contracted by the government through an international public tender.
Essentially, the consultant will work throughout the country, in partnership with the National Institute of Statistics (INE), collecting, digitising and systematising information.
“The data will be collected using technological platforms made available on tablets, through the online data collection application (SurveyCTO and Survey Solutions), and the method for the collection survey will be developed and tested by Ernst & Young and approved by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the INE and the World Bank, thus guaranteeing universal access for all,” he concluded.
