The increasing number of internally displaced people [IDPs] is depleting response capacity in Metuge,Cabo Delgado province, district administrator António Nandanga has told deputies of the Commission on Constitutional Affairs, Human Rights and Legality of the Assembly of the Republic.
Nandanga said that Metuge district currently hosts around 56,600 IDPs, corresponding to about 13,000 families. Of these, about 10,000 had arrived in the past three weeks, further limiting the district’s ability to provide them with support.
In response, the President of the First Commission, Deputy António Boene, guaranteed to do everything in his power to mitigate the problem. “It is necessary to be strong and united to overcome this situation, and we, as deputies of the Assembly of the Republic, are going to put pressure on the competent entities so that there is a solution as soon as possible,” Notícias quotes Boene as saying.
