The President of the Republic, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, on Wednesday, February 24, received the Letters of Credential of the new High Commissioner of the Republic of South Africa, Siphiwe Nyanda and the new High Commissioner of India, Ankan Banerjee.
On the occasion, the Mozambican Head of State expressed a warm welcome to the new South African ambassador Siphiwe Nyanda, who was in Mozambique during the fight against apartheid.
President Nyusi also spoke of the connection between Mozambique and South Africa, and the Mozambique’s support in the fight against the apartheid regime.
The Head of State highlighted the relevance of South Africa’s contribution to the life of Mozambique, particularly in the close relationship between the two peoples and countries, as well as in the way the two Heads of State view the importance of increasing friendly relations between the two nations.
President Nyusi also praised the strength of Mozambique-South African ties of cooperation ties, which currently cover a wide range of activities in a number of areas, among them hydrocarbons, energy, agriculture, defence and security, trade, industry, transport and communications.
The Head of State welcomed the commitment of the governments of South Africa and of Mozambique to increasingly consolidate the multiple levels of cooperation, reiterating the need to hold a third joint commission, an evaluation mechanism and regular programming of subsequent actions in the relations between the two countries and peoples.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Verónica Macamo told reporters that the President of the Republic expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the South African Government for the invaluable humanitarian support to the victims of Covid-19, during Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, and to those displaced by terrorism in Cabo Delgado province.
With regard to India, President Nyusi expressed a warm welcome to Mozambique to the High Commissioner, having stressed that the historical genesis of the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries dates back to the beginning of the establishment of ties of solidarity within the liberation movement. Africa and Asia, anchored in the broad and dynamic movement of the non-Aligned, in the liberation of the peoples of Southern Africa.
President Nyusi highlighted the firmness of the existing partnership between Mozambique and India, embodied in the strong relationship of friendship and cooperation, also praising the role of the leaders of the two countries in strengthening these partnerships, having made reference to the exchange of visits by the heads of the Mozambican and Indian governments.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1975, relations between the two countries have evolved in an auspicious way, so that Mozambique is today India’s second largest aid destination in Africa, illustrated by the broad framework of bilateral cooperation that comprises more than a dozen areas in which development assistance, mineral resources and energy, transport and communications, education and human development, agriculture and food security, health, among others, multiply.
President Nyusi expressed his thanks for the important humanitarian support provided by the Indian Government in the context of Covid-19, particularly in alleviating the devastating impact caused by natural disasters and tourism.
The Indian Ambassador reiterated his country’s readiness to provide 100,000 vaccine doses to Mozambique in order control the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Mozambican statesman praised the political and diplomatic consultation prevailing between Mozambique and India in the multilateral domain of international forums such as the United Nations, the Indian Ocean Rim Association and the India-Africa Summit, among others.
