In Maputo province, road traffic between the headquarters town of Magude district and several of its administrative posts has been interrupted by the rising waters of the Incomati river.
The situation is a result of dam discharges by upstream countries South Africa and Eswatini.
Seventy-two hectares of various crops were affected as a result, of which twenty-four were declared lost, leaving 154 families in a state of food emergency.
The information was shared with Radio Mozambique by the spokesperson for the Magude district government, Milagre Machaieie.
“As a result of the rising water levels of the Incomati river, we have four submerged bridges; those between Magude and the towns of Macupulane and Mulelemane, between Mulelemane and Chichuco and also the administrative post of Magude-sede and Panjane, through the localities of Chivonguene and Mulelemane. The bridge over the Masonto river between Timanguene and Mucimbo is also submerged,” Machaieie said.
The rising water had also flooded pasture affecting more than 1,000 head of cattle and 400 smaller ruminants.
