President of the Republic Filipe Nyusi has urged the health sector to improve mechanisms for managing medications in order to prevent theft and stock shortages in healthcare units.
The head of state made his recommendation on Saturday during the inauguration of the
Massinga District Hospital in Inhambane province.
According to Nyusi, improving healthcare provision is not just about building new health facilities. It is crucial to ensure adequate human resources, equipment, and the functionality of specialized services, as well as the availability of essential medications.
He acknowledged that the country had made progress in medication logistics with the
establishment of regional and provincial pharmaceutical distribution centres, but argued that medication shortages were often not due to a lack of drugs but were more related to management issues.
Regarding the newly inaugurated healthcare facility, Nyusi said that it fulfilled a long-held dream of the people of Massinga and neighbouring communities, meeting the growing demand for access to quality healthcare services.
The new Massinga hospital is part of the "One District, One Hospital" presidential initiative.
Massinga District Hospital is a modern healthcare facility, equipped with advanced
technology and services, including emergency rooms, an operating theatre, wards with a
capacity of 80 beds, a blood bank, outpatient services, a pharmacy, clinical services, and radiology, among others.
The hospital has a staff of 249 professionals, including doctors, technicians and
administrative personnel.
