Mozambique in process of joining African Petroleum Producers’ Organization

Mozambique is in the process of joining the African Petroleum Producers Organization, (APPO) and the Global Financing Facility for Women, Children and Adolescents (GFF).

The announcement of the country’s accession to these international organisations was made yesterday in Maputo by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, at the opening ceremony of the 9th edition of Mozambique International Mining & Energy Conference and Exhibition – MMEC 2023.

Filipe Nyusi said that Mozambique’s membership in these two organisations will allow the country to develop good practices in the management of mineral resources for the common good of Mozambicans.

Comprising 18 African countries, APPO serves as a platform for cooperation, harmonisation of policies and the sharing of knowledge, skills and expertise among African oil producers. Last November, Namibia and Senegal became the latest countries to join the organisation, reflecting efforts to bring in emerging petroleum producers, in addition to leveraging more mature players.

Existing members of APPO include Africa’s biggest oil and gas producers. Algeria, Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Republic of Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Libya, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and South Africa are all members.

GFF is a multi-stakeholder global partnership housed at the World Bank that is committed to ensuring all women, children and adolescents can survive and thrive. Launched in July 2015, the GFF supports 36 low and lower-middle income countries with catalytic financing and technical assistance to develop and implement prioritised national health plans to scale up access to affordable, quality care for women, children and adolescents. The GFF also works with countries to maximise the use of domestic financing and external support for better, more sustainable health results.

In the last ten years, the contribution of the extractive industry to Mozambique’s gross domestic product has risen from 1.8 to 10.6%. This growth, according to the president, is the result of related activities in some provinces of the country.

MMEC 2023 takes place at a time when the world is seeking solutions to the challenge of climate change. President Nyusi is therefore asking that tangible ideas for the massification of clean energy production emerge from the seminar.

The two-day event takes place under the theme ‘Utilising Mozambique’s Natural Resources for Transformational and Sustainable Economic Development’.
