The President of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, yesterday promised to “work with everyone” in the term of office he is now beginning, stating that in politics “there are no enemies”, only “adversaries”.
“We will work with everyone, because we are all brothers, hence the need for all of us to work to consolidate peace, consolidate national reconciliation and, above all, to place in the hearts of all Mozambicans this need for forgiveness and reconciliation,” Daniel Chapo said on Thursday in Maputo at a religious gathering that brought together representatives of diverse faiths over “Repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation: Praying for Mozambique”.
Speaking at the end of the service organized by the Council of Religions of Mozambique, Presidet Chapo highlighted “hope” for the coming times and guaranteed that he would continue dialogue with opposition parties initiated by the previous president, Filipe Nyusi.
“We will continue this dialogue and we are absolutely certain that we will find consensus and mechanisms to stabilize the country as quickly as possible,” Chapo assured.
“We will continue working to achieve peace, economic, political and social stability in the country, and above all, achieve national reconciliation. These are important foundations for our development,” he concluded.
This was Daniel Chapo’s first official event as the fifth President of Mozambique after Wednesday’s inauguration ceremony.
“We believe it is a blessing to begin the first day of work leading this country for the next five years with this inter-religious service, in which our religious leaders are here to bless us,” Chapo concluded.
On December 23, Daniel Francisco Chapo, 48, was proclaimed by the Constitutional Council (CC) as the winner of the election for President of the Republic, with 65.17% of the votes, in the general elections of October 9, which included legislative and provincial assembly elections, which Frelimo also won.
Presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who does not recognize the election results, called for protests and Daniel Chapo’s election has been contested in the streets since October, with protesters demanding the “reestablishment of the electoral truth”.
The clashes with the police have already caused more than 300 deaths and 600 people injured, according to the electoral platform Decide, a non-governmental organization.
