The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, has pledged to continue funding Mozambique’s development and job creation.
According to Makhtar Diop, the IFC deputy president, who was speaking to reporters on Wednesday after he was received in an audience by Mozambican President Daniel Chapo, on the sidelines of the 9th Tokyo International Conference for Africa’s Development (TICAD 9), a three-day event taking place in Tokyo, the meeting with the President allowed for deeper cooperation between the World Bank Group and Mozambique.
“During the meeting, we discussed the programmes funded by the World Bank in Mozambique. It was also an opportunity to discuss the sectors of electricity, agriculture and tourism”, Diop said.
He believed that the mentioned sectors are vital to overcoming one of the biggest challenges facing Mozambique and the African continent, which is job creation.
“All sectors are very important for job creation. Job creation is a challenge for all countries, particularly in Africa. The agenda included concrete initiatives that are being prepared for the coming months”, he said, adding that “we will organize a mission to Mozambique in September.”
“I would like to personally visit the country to implement some initiatives I discussed with the President and the ministers”, he added.
Last July, World Bank President Ajay Banga visited Mozambique. During meetings, the government and the World Bank discussed the strategic vision that the country has in order to become the regional electricity distribution hub.
