The Port of Quelimane continues to receive no cargo, despite having all the requisite conditions for the purpose. This compromises the collection of revenue for the state, the Tax Authority (AT)notes.
Since the export of log wood stopped approximately four years ago, the operational costs of handling cargo and the fact that the Port of Quelimane is not in deep waters have meant little or no shipping vessels have docked there.
These and other facts are contributing negatively to the collection of revenue by the Tax Authority.
According to Zambézia Tax Authority provincial delegate Ambrósio Orrubale, the port of Quelimane has not been operating in the desired way for a long time.
“Before we had timber exports, but with the law that prohibits exports in logs, everything stopped. If we had the port working, it would undoubtedly be an additional value for our state,” he said.
“The goals have already been established for the delegation. When we look at external taxes, without goods coming from other corners, we will have nothing to charge, which is why we are more committed to monitoring,” Orrubale explained.
