A hyena which invaded the village of Gologolo, in Necungas, Moatize district, Tete province, has attacked and injured nine people.
The head of the locality, José Chagomoca, told TV Miramar that the seriously injured “were evacuated to neighbouring Malawi,” Gologolo being located near the border with this country.
One of the seriously injured had all five fingers of his right hand amputated, while another had his index finger amputated and another lost three fingers of his left hand, Chagomoca detailed.
The hyena also killed “10 goats, a cow, a dog, eight chickens and two ducks,” he added, before a night-time chase ended in the animal being killed.
Police have gone to the area to guarantee the safety of the population.
“We talked to the community, advising them against entering the bush singly. The PRM is guarding the community so the worst doesn’t happen,” Chagomoca said.
Gologolo is located more than 20 kilometres from Necungas, the headquarters town, and less than 10 kilometres from Malawi.
