A prominent Mozambican human rights activist, Adriano Nuvunga, suffered a death threat in the small hours of Monday morning, according to a report in the independent newssheet “Carta de Moçambique”.
Two projectiles were thrown into the yard of Nuvunga’s Maputo home while he was sleeping. Inspections by agents of the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) confirmed that the projectiles were bullets for an AK-47 assault rifle.
The bullets were partially wrapped in paper on which messages had been scribbled. The messages could not all be deciphered, but one read “Be careful, Nuvunga”.
Nuvunga called in the police and SERNIC, who took away the bullets and inspected the crime scene.
Civil society organisations are regarding the incident as a death threat, possibly intended to silence Nuvunga, who is the director of the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), and Chairperson of the Mozambican Network of Human Rights Defenders.
He is an outspoken critic of many government policies, and one of the best known faces of Mozambican civil society.
It is with regret that we have to advise that two bullets were lodged at #Professor @adriano_nuvunga ’s (Chairperson of the @RMDDH_Moz) residence and he discovered them today, 15/08, in the morning.
This is indeed a grave escalation in #threats against Professor Nuvunga. pic.twitter.com/Pl3EEzVwsp

Death threats made against leading Mozambican human rights defender @adriano_nuvunga. Unknown people threw at Nuvunga’s compound, two bullets.
