Mozambican Health Minister Ussene Isse believes that human health research is an essential pillar for defining health policies, decision-making and planning in the National Health System (SNS).
According to Isse, who was speaking on Wednesday, in Maputo, during the ceremony in which he swore into office five members of the recently created Multi Institutional Commission for the Supervision of Human Health Research, it is urgent to define the mechanisms to ensure that evidence obtained on the highest standards of quality and principles of ethics is favoured.
The members in question are: Eladia de Almeida, from civil society; Eusébio Chaquisse from the Health Ministry; and academics Jacinto da Conceicao, Cezerilo Palaca and João Luma.
According to the Minister of Health, the Health Ministry must carry out human health research, raising the quality and principles of ethical standards and human research.
“Under the law, the Multi-Institutional Commission for Human Health Research was created to carry out health research activities throughout the country, ensuring compliance with the principles and standards for carrying out research. Research into human health is important for development, looking at development technologies, vaccines and medicines”, he said.
For his part, the national director of research at the National Health Institute, Sérgio Chicumbe, revealed that the Health Ministry carries out about 30 human health research projects every year.
“It is important to mention that there is a specific law on human health research because it’s the only research that involves human beings. There is also a system for guaranteeing quality and minimizing risks”, he said.
