Mozambique: Cabo Delgado needs $1.2M to tackle rainy season impacts - INGD
Mozambique is to host the first African Portuguese-speaking Countries’ International Congress on Cancer from 25 to 27 of May.
During the three-day meeting, about 150 participants will discuss the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancers that affect about 3,000 people a year in Mozambique.
The cancer is considered to be the country’s public health priority in terms of prevention.
National Director of Medical Assistance, Ussene Isse, says that 3,000 cases of cancer are diagnosed annually across the country. Of these, 57 percent are women, suffering mainly from cancer of the breast and womb, followed by Kapozi’s sarcoma.
Isse says the country is investing in staff training, with four Mozambican doctors in specialist training in Brazil and Portugal set to join the eight oncology experts already working in the country.
The International Congress on Cancer is being coordinated in partnership with the Office of the President’s Wife, and the opening ceremony on May 25 will be chaired by Isaura Nyusi.
