National football coach Chiquinho Conde is soon to be awarded an honorary doctorate by Púnguè University (UniPúnguè), the institution’s rector, Emília Nhalevilo, revealed on Rádio Moçambique’s ‘Café da Manhã’ program yesterday (15-09).
The Chimoio-based university decided to confer the honour on Conde for his contribution to Mozambican sports, both as a player and as a coach. This is an honorary academic title awarded to individuals who excel in fields such as culture, science, arts, and humanities, without requiring formal academic experience.
Chiquinho Conde is part of the first generation to lead Mozambique to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON). He was the first national football player to play in three editions of the continental competition, a feat only later matched by Tico-Tico and potentially achieved by Dominguez and Mexer.
Conde is the Mozambican player with the most appearances in the Portuguese Football League, totalling 310, surpassing Zainadine Júnior’s 262. His record also includes the national top scorer record in the same competition, with 87 goals. The highlight of his career came while playing for Sporting Clube de Portugal, the club where Geny Catamo currently plays.
As coach of the national team, Chiquinho Conde has achieved unprecedented results, leading the Mambas to three consecutive qualifications for Confederation of African Football competitions and securing the team’s place in the knockout stage of a continental competition for the first time.
Of the six occasions Mozambique has qualified for the African Cup of Nations, Conde has been directly involved in five. He participated as a player in 1986, 1996 and 1998, serving as captain in the last two, and returned as coach in 2023 and 2025. He was only not associated with the group in the 2010 tournament.
