The Maputo Military Hospital announced this morning that it has set up a committee to investigate an “alarming” situation in which a piece of surgical cloth was removed from a patient’s abdomen.
The response was triggered by a video circulating on social media and refers to a case in which the piece of cloth was left behind during a surgery performed at that hospital, probably in 2021.
“HMM recognizes the seriousness of the incident and deeply regrets it,” said the management of that health unit in a note shared with the press, stressing that it would like the victim and her family members to approach the hospital to provide relevant information about the facts.
In turn, the Order of Doctors of Mozambique (OMM) also issued a statement indicating that “preliminary inquiries with potential institutions involved have so far not allowed the identification of the probable patient, health unit, professionals possibly involved or other relevant data”.
The OMM also reports that it has created its commission of inquiry and asks that other similar cases be reported to the association so that what happened can be clarified and any potential victims supported.
