Another 254 patients with haemorrhagic conjunctivitis have been diagnosed in Mozambique, dozens of them in a new outbreak in Sofala province.
Between Sunday (03-03) and Monday (04-03), the Ministry of Health identified another 254 Mozambicans infected by the adenovirus, which causes sudden swelling of the eyelids, congestion and redness and pain in the eyes, bringing the countrywide cumulative total of cases in less than a month to 3,762.
In addition to the active outbreaks in the provinces of Nampula, Cabo Delgado, Maputo (province and city), a new outbreak has now occurred in Sofala, where there are now 105 patients with the highly contagious disease.
Contracting the disease can be prevented by washing the hands with clean water and soap several times a day, not sharing personal items such as towels, bed linen or cosmetics, and avoiding contact with people suffering from the disease. Individuals showing symptoms should be isolated as long as they persist.
