The excluded candidate for the PODEMOS presidential race, Helder Mendonça was violently assaulted by unknown individuals on Thursday in Malanga neighbourhood, Maputo city, in an attack which the party spokesman says was politically motivated because the aggressors promised to put an end to PODEMOS, Sala da Paz reports today .
“They even said they were going to destroy the party and that he should stop campaigning because he talks a lot. So it was clear to us that it was for political reasons,”said Carlos Quembo, spokesman for PODEMOS.
Regarding the health condition of Helder Mendonça, who is first on the PODEMOS list for the Assembly of the Republic, for Maputo Province, he is considered out of danger.
“He has a cast around his leg and he has bruises on his face. It was really violent. They used machete to injure his legs and a tennis club [sic] to beat him in the face. A complaint was filed in the Police but so far there is no development.”
A week before, the first on the list for Maputo city, José Chemane was also assaulted. “We thought it was just a physical assault and an attempted robbery. But after they [now] assaulted Helder it became clear to us that it was for political reasons [the attack on José Chemane].”
