At least 1,085 people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance in the administrative post of Namirroa, in Erati district, in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula, after strong winds and heavy rains on Monday.
In Namirroa, the swathe of destruction affected 399 houses made of flimsy material and six brick houses, one place of worship, a waiting house for pregnant women and the solar powered system providing the area with electricity, according to the Administrator of Erati, Araujo Momade, when interviewed by AIM on Thursday.
“This was an isolated episode of bad weather that destroyed houses and other infrastructures,” said Momade, adding that his team was heading to Namirroa to assess the situation closely and also to provide the necessary humanitarian assistance.
Alberto Armando, delegate of the National Disaster Management Institute (INGC), the country’s relief agency, has guaranteed that first aid kits have been sent to the administrative post, intended to alleviate the suffering of the affected households.
Plastic sheets for shelter and food supplies, Armando said, have been sent to the region to ensure the first assistance to the affected households. “Today, a lorry loaded with several goods is on its way to Namirroa,” he said.
