Six health officials in Niassa province, northern Mozambique, have been arrested on suspicion of killing a security guard to steal medicine from a warehouse, which they then set on fire, police announced today.
Moisés Matangue, a spokesman for the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) in Niassa, quoted today by the daily Noticias, said that in addition to the six officials, two more men with no connection to the health sector are also under arrest for alleged involvement in the murder and theft of medicines.
The murder and theft took place on 21 June 21 this year, added Moisés Matangue.
In addition to medications, the suspects also stole hospital equipment from the provincial warehouse.
The stolen material was destined for sale on the informal market.
Sernic’s spokesman at Niassa said after the robbery, the suspects set fire to the warehouse to erase any evidence.
