Health authorities in Mozambique have once again reported cases of cholera, after more than 45 days without new episodes of the disease, and the implementation of preventive and control measures to prevent its spread.
The disease, which for weeks was confined to the Mogovolas district, has now been confirmed in the Murrupula district and the city of Nampula, and in Mopeia, in Zambézia.
Data shared by the Ministry of Health (MISAU) on the epidemiological situation indicate that, since the outbreak of the disease in October 2024, 466 positive cases have been reported, 120 more than the last update on December 16, when activities were halted due to vandalism at the Nametil Cholera Treatment Centre.
Of this total, 418 were reported in Nampula and 48 in Zambézia, maintaining the cumulative total of 29 deaths, of which 25 occurred in the community.
This scenario led the sector and partners to activate the maximum alert level and intensify measures, at a time when almost the entire country is experiencing rainfall, which could worsen sanitation conditions in areas at greater risk.
Health authorities also point to the implementation of prevention and control actions, including vaccination, awareness-raising to observe hygiene and sanitation measures and patient treatment.
The sector also continues to educate communities about the importance of drinking water treated with chlorine or boiling, washing the hands with soap and water or ash after using the latrine and before handling and/or consuming food, an activity that has the support of local leaders, elementary multipurpose agents and activists.
In the event of symptoms such as acute diarrhoea, vomiting and dehydration, MISAU urges the population to seek immediate medical attention.
