The Ministry of Health (MISAU) is encourage the public to report to the authorities, including the police, any citizens breaking quarantine and resuming normal life before the 14 days recommended under the state of emergency regulations.
The appeal was made in Maputo yesterday at the daily Covid-19 briefing, in which the authorities confirmed another case, bringing to 81 the number of cases registered so far in the country.
The 81st case was detected among the 269 samples tested between Monday and yesterday, and is that of a 46-year-old Mozambican man, residing in the city of Maputo, who returned on TAP flight from Lisbon along with 214 other passengers.
Sérgio Chicumbe, from the National Institute of Health (INS), said that the Maputo Health Department was investigating information circulating yesterday according to which at least one of the passengers on that flight, a businessman, had been seen circulating in the city, in violation of the mandatory quarantine.
According to Sérgio Chicumbe, “a good part” of citizens fulfil the quarantine requirement, and receive phone calls and even visits from health personnel, but admitted that “one or two escape surveillance”.
In these cases, health personnel sought to involve other sectors, including the police, to persuade people to return to isolation.
Regarding passengers on the TAP flight from Portugal, a country with a high rate of infection, Chicumbe confirmed that the authorities had decreed a mandatory 14-day home quarantine for all passengers and crew, despite the negative results recorded in 214 out of the 215 cases.
Regarding the new infection, Chicumbe said that the mapping of contacts was underway from Portugal, where the individual had been during the last days.
Of the samples tested between Monday and yesterday, 217 samples were collected in Maputo and 52 in Cabo Delgado, where an epidemiological investigation is taking place at the Total oil camp in Afungi, Palma district.
National Director of Public Health Rosa Marlene said that the African continent had seen a “substantial” worsening of infections compared to the previous 24 hours.
As of 6:00 p.m. yesterday, global figures indicated 3.6 million Covid-19 cases, with just over 1.2 million recovered and about 255,000 dead. Africa contributed to these numbers with 49,206 cases, with 16,700 recovered and 1,885 deaths.
