One patient who sustained serious injuries during the festivities to usher in the New Year has died at Maputo Central Hospital (HCM), the health authorities reported on Friday.
Briefing the media about the activities carried out by the health authorities at the country’s largest health unit, the director of the Emergency Services, Madalena Manjate, said the patient was rushed to the hospital after he received serious head injuries. Despite the attempts made by health staff the patient did not resist the severity of his injury and died during the night.
“We had two patients who were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit after they contracted serious traumatic injury to their heads, of whom one died,” said Manjate, pointing out that the transition to the New Year went smoothly when compared to 2019.
Unlike previous years, where people, especially young men, often sustained serious injuries as they let off dangerous fireworks, sometimes injuring their fingers or causing blindness, the emergency service only recorded one case of firework abuse this year, which caused slight injuries.
Manjate added that one patient was also admitted to the Covid-19 Isolation Ward of the Central Hospital, but showing only mild symptoms, thus posing no risk to his own life. She asked people to keep on observing preventive measures against Covid-19 such as physical distancing, avoiding crowds and wearing face masks.
The Hospital treated 256 people, 97 of whom were injured in road accidents, often caused by hit and run drivers.
“We would like to advise people to avoid partying on the streets, as such festivities can result in accidents,” she said.
There had also been cases of physical assaults, but there was no need for any surgery. “The hospital has a total of 670 units of blood should there be any need for transfusions, but fortunately things went smoothly,” said Manjate.
