The 2nd HCB Technical-Scientific Conference has been taking place since Wednesday, September 10th, at the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Cultural Centre in Vila do Songo, Tete province, under the theme “Renewable Energy – The Future of the Energy Matrix”.
The event, which focuses on the transformative potential of renewable energy in Mozambique, runs until Friday, September 12th, organized by the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Plant (HCB), and brings together experts, students and innovators to discuss the future of the energy sector in Mozambique, with especial regard to renewable energy.
During his opening remarks, HCB chairman Tomás Matola highlighted the opportunities that Mozambique’s natural resources represent for the development of sustainable energy solutions. “Mozambique is endowed with abundant natural resources, including sunlight, wind, water, and biomass. This uniquely positions us to capitalize on the benefits of renewable energy,” Matola said.
Tomás Matola also emphasized the shared responsibility of investing in innovative solutions to ensure the success of the energy sector. “Collaboration is essential; HCB is committed to working with diverse partners to share knowledge and experiences that will pave the way for a sustainable energy future,” he remarked.
During the event’s opening ceremony, two key addresses were made: one by economist and former Minister of Energy, and current CEO of Banco BIG, Eduardo Namburete, who discussed “Mozambique’s Energy Potential: The Case of Renewable Energy”; and another by Bernardo Mariano Júnior, assistant to the United Nations Secretary-General for Information and Communications Technology, who spoke on “Electricity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence”.
This meeting brought together experts, students and innovators from institutions such as the Songo Polytechnic Institute, the Tete Polytechnic Institute, Púnguè University, Zambeze University, Save University, Eduardo Mondlane University, the Higher Institute of Transport and Communications, the Lusophone Renewable Energy Association, Electricidade de Moçambique, the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project Implementation Office, the Energy Fund, and the United Nations University to discuss renewable energy and strategies for diversifying Mozambique’s energy matrix.
In a year in which HCB celebrates its 50th anniversary as a hydroelectric power generation company, the II Technical-Scientific Conference reaffirms the company’s commitment to fostering sustainable development initiatives and promoting scientific research. The event serves as a vital platform for exchanging ideas and building partnerships that will drive progress in renewable energy, as well as establish a resilient and sustainable energy sector that benefits all Mozambicans while safeguarding the environment for future generations.
