Hidroelectrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), the company that operates the Cahora Bassa dam in the western Mozambican province of Tete, announced on Thursday that it has already met its production goal for 2021.
In a press release, the company revealed that on Tuesday it had met its target of 14,125,53 gigawatt-hours.
According to HCB chairperson Boavida Muhambe, production could surpass the target by six per cent by the end of the year. He added that if this happens, “it will certainly have a significant impact on the company’s revenues and consequently on its contribution to the national economy through the taxes and fees that it pays”.
HCB pointed out that plentiful rainfall since 2020 had enabled the dam to fill to 97 per cent of capacity and that the current height of the reservoir is 320 metres above sea level.
The company stressed that it is committed to implementing its maintenance and rehabilitation programme to ensure that it can produce and transmit electricity with greater availability and reliability.
