The Cahora-Bassa hydro-electric dam in Tete province has increased its discharge rate from 4,400 to 5,000 cubic metres per second since Thursday
According to a statement issued by the Administração Regional de Águas do Centro, the move aims to ensure the safety of the Cahora-Bassa reservoir, which has been receiving large inflows as a result of rain in the upper Zambezi, in addition to inflow from Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The Cahora-Bassa dam is now about 98% full, prompting the HCB Board of Directors to increase discharges for a period of about 35 days, in an attempt to minimise the effects of the floods in the lower Zambezi.
The ongoing HCB operation is expected to cause flooding of low magnitude in the riparian regions of the main course of the Zambezi River, especially in the Cahora-Bassa, Marara, Tete, Moatize, Dôa and Mutarara districts in Tete province, Tambara in Manica, Chemba, Caia and Marromeu in Sofala, and Mopeia, Luabo and Chinde in Zambezia.
Some roads in the lower Zambezi area, in the districts of Dôa and Mutarara, may be affected.
ARA-Centro appeals to all public and private entities, local authorities, economic agents and the general public to take precautionary measures, withdrawing from flood-prone areas and avoiding crossing rivers where possible.
