The Cuban government is urging a forceful investigation into the financing of the terrorists plaguing the province of Cabo Delgado as one of the best ways to complement the ongoing military actions on the ground.
Speaking on Tuesday after a meeting with the Speaker of the Assembly of the Republic, Ambassador of Cuba to Mozambique Pavel Diaz Hernandez said that closing off sources of financing would go half way to ending the problem.
“One needs to find the real supply of money and military equipment used, because those terrorists are using weapons and communications equipment supplied by someone. It is important to find these sources and cut them off,” Pavel Diaz Hernandez said.
The Cuban ambassador also thinks that Mozambique needs international support, particularly from neighbouring countries.
“Mozambique needs international support, because it is dealing with a global problem. We know that Mozambique has done everything in its power, but it is a problem that requires international solidarity. The region (SADC) in general, and neighbouring countries in particular, have a responsibility in this regard … and we believe that, together, they have the capacity to solve this problem directly,” Pavel Diaz Hernandez said.
A long-time supporter of Mozambique, Havana says that this time, contrary to what happened during the National Liberation Struggle and the 16-Year War, no military support is foreseen.
“It is not foreseen, and we have not received any request in this regard,” he said.
