O País
Since yesterday, Mozambique has a health institute equipped with a laboratory capable of diagnosing highly dangerous viruses, as well as samples of suspected infections.
The headquarters of the National Health Institute in the Marracuene district of Maputo was inaugurated by President Nyusi this Wednesday. After the opening, the head of state visited the three operational blocks, encompassing medical toxicology, advanced microscopy, malacology and high security laboratories, the latter considered the most important.
This is the country’s first institute with the capacity to diagnose viruses such as Ebola and resistant tuberculosis, and to analyze samples of suspected intoxication, similar to those collected at Chitima in Tete province.
For Filipe Nyusi, this is yet another achievement of one of the government’s goals.
Speaking on the same occasion, US Ambassador Dean Pittman highlighted Mozambique’s gains and praised the quality of its existing health professionals.
This is the second advanced technology laboratory in Southern Africa, the first being situated in neighbouring South Africa. It was built by the government of Mozambique in partnership with the United States.
