Mozambique on Friday handed over the chairmanship of the African Correctional Services Association (ACSA) at the closing ceremony of the 6th ACSA Biennial Conference in Dakar, Senegal, 15-19 May, 2023.
The conference attracted around 400 participants including heads of penitentiary services across the continent, experts and academics in the field of corrections, NGOs, CSOs, and other regional and international partners. The opening ceremony was attended by the Senegalese prime minister, Amadou Ba.
The event aimed to reflect on the improvement of conditions of internment in African penitentiary establishments and propose solutions. The theme of this year’s meeting was, “Building Resilient Correctional Systems: Lessons from the Covid-19 Pandemic”.
Mozambique had chaired ACSA since 2017, having been re-elected in 2019 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
About ACSA
ACSA was officially launched in Livingstone, Zambia, on the 26th September, 2008. It brings together heads of correctional and prisons services on the African continent and strives to attain a paradigm shift in African penal institutions from punitive to correctional human rights based systems guided by democratic values and the rule of law, as stated in the organisation’s mission and vision statement.
