A circular from the Tax Authority of Mozambique issued on Monday (16-12) prohibits the import, sale and handling of all types of pyrotechnic objects and fireworks, commonly known as “paixões”, during the 2024/2025 festive season.
The document, intended for customs officials, customs brokers, economic agents, among other entities, explains that the decision was determined by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce on the grounds that such articles pose a risk to public health.
This is the first time that the country has registered a ban of this kind. On previous occasions the ban only applied to some districts in Cabo Delgado province due to the issue of terrorism.
Regarding the justification given, the risk to public health, it should be noted that, in the past, the health authorities and the police have been content to issue instructions on the correct handling of pyrotechnic objects and fireworks, and have never issued a complete ban.
Normally, the letting off of fireworks during the festive season was permitted between 11:50 pm on 31 December and 12:50 am on 1 January.
