Mozambique: Six thousand stranded as floods hit Chibuto district
Folha de Maputo / Dinic spokesman Alberto Sumbane
Mozambique’s National Directorate of Civil Identification (Dinic) suspended about 100 identity card applications in the first two weeks of February on suspicion of fraud, the agency announced.
“We have already had three Mozambican citizens detained for involvement in schemes to falsify birth registers to facilitate obtaining ID cards,” daily Notícias quotes Dinic spokesman Alberto Sumbane as saying.
Irregularities include name and age changes, with Dinic officials suspected of involvement, he added.
“The management has tried to remove all those who are not in the service from the vicinity of the counters, to avoid these situations,” Sumbane said.
The agency announced in August of last year that about 200 cases of document falsification had been detected in the first half of 2017. At the time, ten Dinic employees were subject to disciplinary proceedings for involvement in corruption and bribe-taking.
