EUMAM MOZ: Role 1 Medical Unit
Screen grab: Sala da Paz
Unknown gunmen, suspected of being supporters of the dissident Renamo Military Junta, on Monday night attacked the administrative post of Capirizanje, in Moatize district, in the central Mozambican province of Tete.
The gunmen opened fire on the official residence of the head of the post, Americo Nfumane. He told the independent television station STV on Thursday that in the dead of the night, when it was 23:45, intense gunfire was heard at the official residence.
“As we heard several gunshots, we exchanged messages between one another so as to coordinate what to do. We told everyone to keep a watchful eye on the situation,” Nfumane said, adding that he was forced to leave the residence. There were no causalities from the latest attack.
After several shots, the attackers dropped a four page letter, at the door of Nfumane’s official residence. The letter contested the leadership of Ossufo Momade, head of the country’s main opposition party, Renamo.
This makes it almost certain that the gunmen were members or supporters of the Renamo Military Junta, which regards Momade as “a traitor” and does not recognize the peace agreement he signed with President Filipe Nyusi in August 2019.
The first attack in Capirizandje was on 10 April, and consisted of gunfire against a local police station. The gunshots spread panic throughout the area, but nobody was injured. The police later arrested two individuals suspected of involvement in the attack.
After the second attack, many members of the local community have decided to spend the nights in the bush and come back home after sunrise, as they fear other incidents in the dead of the night.
