Accidents in Maputo province are escalating, with an increase in deaths and injuries from traffic accidents. Causes vary from drivers’ lack of qualification to fatigue, speeding and mechanical problems.
Data from the Maputo provincial government shows that 83 people died last year, compared to 63 in 2023, with the highest incidence on National Highways 2, 4, and the Maputo Circular.
In the first half of this year, 28 accidents were recorded, resulting in 63 deaths and 28 people seriously injured, while in the same period last year, there were 12 accidents resulting in 16 deaths and 11 seriously injured people.
National Highway Number 1 (N1) in Manhiça district is the main culprit, especially in the communities of Maluana, Palmeira, and 3 de Fevereiro.
Given this situation, the provincial government is proposing an increase in road inspection stations and the introduction of a ‘Guia de Trânsito’ [Transit Order] for all public passenger transport services operating between districts and provinces.
The proposal was presented on Friday in the Municipality of Matola during the body’s 3rd Provincial Meeting on Road Safety in Maputo.
Participants unanimously stated that such measures could address the concerns of the government and society, as well as help the police regain authority on the roads.
