Mozambican guitarist Jimmy Dludlu is playing a concert in Maputo tonight to launch his new album, “In The Groove”.
The concert will include performances by guest Mozambican musicians Mingas and Isabel Novella, rapper Simba and renowned South African artist Judith Sephuma.
The album, the ninth in 50-year-old Dludlu’s 33-year career, saw limited release last Friday. Composed of 15 tracks, the album was recorded with Mozambican and South African artists, including instrumentalists Nelton Miranda, Hélder Gonzaga, Taphelo Mthembo, Lucas Khamulo and Nelson Lifanica.
Dudlu says “In The Groove” is a tribute to Mozambican music and artists generally and Chamanculo in Maputo, the neighbourhood where he spent his childhood, in particular.
The album portrays the musician’s childhood adventures and everyone who grew up in the humble family. It is also a tribute to Mozambican musical tradition, with remakes of several popular songs which have resonated across the generations.
The album, which has already begun to make waves in Mozambique, particularly with the themes “Ha Deva”, “Masseve”, “Weekend Special”, “Saul” and “Nkulunguana”, has now been released in South Africa.
Tonight’s concert will mix generations of Mozambican and foreign musicians with whom Jimmy Dludlu has recorded and shared stages throughout his career, and the two-and-a-half hour show has been intensively rehearsed.
Jimmy Dludlu’s released albums include “Echoes From the Past”, “Essence of Rhythm”, “Afrocentric”, “Corners of My Soul”, “Portrait”, “Tonota”, “Jimmy Dludlu”, “Live”, and his latest “In the Groove”.
