Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said on Monday that his government will be tireless in neutralising the armed groups that have carried out attacks in the north of the country, noting the relentless performance of the Defence and Security Forces in the area.
“We will not rest until their perpetrators are neutralised and held accountable, so our Defence and Security Forces are on the ground, firm and relentless,” said Nyusi, in a statement to the nation at Heroes Square in Maputo on National Independence Day.
Nyusi called for deep reflection on these groups’ motivations, describing them as “insurgents and evildoers allegedly of religious inspiration.”
“These are hideous acts that disgust everyone because they violate public order and sow mourning in Mozambican families,” Nyusi said.
The head of state stressed that many Mozambicans and foreigners that are allegedly members of these groups have already been captured by the Defence and Security Forces and handed over to the legal system.
Nyusi said that combating the instability sown by the groups must be done with respect for human rights and within the rule of law.
The groups began their attacks last October and have already killed dozens of people. They burned hundreds of houses and have also vandalised private and public property.
