The Mozambican government plans to hire almost 3,000 teachers next year, enrol about 10 million students and build 800 classrooms, according to targets defined in the budget proposal for 2024, consulted on Friday by Lusa.
According to the documents supporting the proposal for the Economic and Social Plan and State Budget (PESOE) for 2024, the goal is “to achieve a net enrolment rate for six-year-old students in Grade 1 of 98.9%.
In addition to the hiring of 2,803 teachers for primary and secondary education, in the budget proposal for next year, which is to be discussed and voted on in parliament on December 6th and 7th (Wednesday and Thursday) with votes in favour of the majority of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) guaranteed , the government plans to acquire and distribute around 11,300 school desks and 22,491,500 books.
It is also planned to build 773 classrooms for primary education and 22 secondary schools next year, as well as the requalifying 90 primary schools across the country.
“To reduce school dropout rates, it is planned to allocate 11,950 bicycles and 96,666 uniforms under the ‘Eu Sou Capaz’ program,” the document reads.
The government estimates that primary education in the 2024 school year will have 7,426,426 students, secondary education 2,553,099 and professional technical education 115,756 students, while the number of adults attending literacy courses is expected to grow to 269,865.
The number of students attending higher education in Mozambique is expected to remain practically unchanged compared to 2023, at 257,416, according to the government forecast.
In the allocation of public expenditure planned for 2024 for each of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Mozambican government reserved more than 55,624 million meticais (€800 million), the equivalent to 12.1% of the total, for Quality Education (Goal 4), against 53,898 million meticais (€774.5 million), equivalent to 13.4% of total expenditure, in 2023.
The 17 goals are part of the 2030 Agenda adopted by all United Nations member states in 2015, which defines the priorities and goals for global sustainable development to be achieved by 2030.
