The Mozambican government is calling for “clarity” on the origin of funding for civil society organizations (CSOs) in the country. At the heart of the issue is the problem of money laundering.
“What we want is for this financing process to comply with national laws,” permanent secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs, Justino Tonela, told the media on the sidelines of the first day of the Congress of Civil Society Organizations, in Maputo.
For the representative, it is necessary for civic society platforms, which also contribute to the “development of the country”, to take on the concern with money laundering.
“Therefore, all the actions of civil society organizations must focus precisely on the issue of money laundering,” Tonela stressed.
On the other hand, the executive director of the Civil Society Learning and Training Center (CESC), Fidélia Chemane, explained that the resources to support non-governmental NGOs “are decreasing every day”, forcing the search for new financing strategies.
“The strategy we have been implementing so far is to reflect on what other financing opportunities there are out there,” Chemane explained.
