The Mozambican government has urged domestic workers and members of the National Union of Domestic Employees to join the social security system managed by the National Social Security Institute.
This was one of the themes of International Domestic Workers’ Day which was marked worldwide on Saturday, June 16. In Mozambique, the date was marked by a march in Maputo and several other commemorative events.
The government explains in a press release sent to Folha de Maputo that the measure aims to guarantee the social future of domestic workers, with mechanisms for the purpose already in place, in recognition of the vital role that this socio-economic segment plays.
The city of Maputo currently has 2,783 registered domestic employees, some of whom already enjoy the benefits that the system offers.
